Colonel Oliver O'Gara was born in 1665.

- In 1690 Colonel Oliver O'Gara was occupied as commander of the Jacobote garrison in Jamestown, County Leitrim. His forces repulsed an advance by a much larger force of Williamite troopps under James Douglas.2
- On 12 July 1691 Colonel Oliver O'Gara served with his regiment at the Battle of Aughrim. Following the defeat of the Jacobite forces, he submitted himself as a hostage until it was clear that the terms of the Treaty of Limerick had been honoured. He then went into exile and served with the Irish Brigade of the French Army. He became an influential figure in the Jacobite court-in-exile at Saint-Germain.2
