Working life

• Before 1286 William Fleming, of Barochan, was occupied as militibus.²
• On 12 November 1292 William Fleming, of Barochan, was occupied as soldier in Berwick-upon-Tweed.³
• Between 3 October 1303 and 19 July 1333 William Fleming, of Barochan, was occupied as steward of Lennox. JAF -
  In a cartulary de Levenaux he was described as "tunc temporalis seneschall de Levenax", steward of Lennox. This may have been equivalent to the factor. There is a detached seal of William "Flanders", a fesse surmounted with a bend, with the letters "sigillum WILLI. FLANDRIENSIS". These are the arms of the Flemings of Barrochan.^4,5,6
• Circa 1306 William Fleming, of Barochan, was occupied as sheriff in Lanark.⁷
