Birth

Richard ("the poet who inspired the Maitland Club") Maitland, of Thirlestane (Berwickshire) and Lethington (Haddingtonshire), was born in 1496. THE Literary Institution formed under the title of The Maitland Club, having assumed that designation from Sir Richard Maitland of Lethingtoun, Knight, the amiable and accomplished Poet, as well as the tasteful and industrious Collector and pious preserver of Ancient Scottish Poetry.1,2

Working life

  • On 20 December 1562 Richard ("the poet who inspired the Maitland Club") Maitland, of Thirlestane (Berwickshire) and Lethington (Haddingtonshire), was occupied as Keeper of the Privy Seal.3
  • In 1563 Richard ("the poet who inspired the Maitland Club") Maitland, of Thirlestane (Berwickshire) and Lethington (Haddingtonshire), was occupied as joint Factors, Economists and Chamberlains of the Abbess of Haddington.3
  • In 1567 Richard ("the poet who inspired the Maitland Club") Maitland, of Thirlestane (Berwickshire) and Lethington (Haddingtonshire), was occupied as resigned as Keeper of the Privy Seal in favour of his son John.4
  • On 11 May 1584 Richard ("the poet who inspired the Maitland Club") Maitland, of Thirlestane (Berwickshire) and Lethington (Haddingtonshire), was occupied as was relieved of his judicial duties by an act of sederunty due to his great age, those duties deputed to his son John.5
