"The Fleming Clan of Scotland: a genealogical history" - coming in late 2026!

Fulwood

Hunter notes that "the lands of Fulwood lie on the banks of the Grief in Renfrewshire", as does J Arnold Fleming. Oram places Fulwood "north of Stewarton", which is 20 miles further south and not near the Gryfe. This Fulwood is on Harelaw Road, Kilmarnock. There is also a Fulwood Farm just southeast of Johnstone, Renfrewshire. An online history of the Baronies of Fulwood and Dirleton (Semple family) locates Fulwood "5 miles west of Glasgow airport in the parish of Houston and Kilallan". "The Porterfields" by Frank Burke Porterfield (1947) states (on page 26) that Fulwood "was situated on the River Griffe below Duchall Castle. If we assume that "below" the castle means downstream of it, a consensus emerges that Fulwood was in Renfrewshire, on the River Gryffe downstream of Duchall. This could be the site of the present day Fulwood Wood, which is about 500m from the River Gryfe and near another ancient Fleming property, Barochan. The original estatey was probably much larger than the present-day wood. The 1654 Blaeu Atlas of Scotland has a description of Renfrew on page 63. It lists Nobles of the area including "Fleming of Barochan" and "Sempill of Fulwood". I conclude therefore, that the evidence shows that Fulwood was where Fulwood Wood is now situated.
