Thomas ("the Pragmatic") Fleming, of Fulwood, 2nd Earl of Wigtown, was adopted. He was born circa 1333.1

Titles

Thomas ("the Pragmatic") Fleming, of Fulwood, 2nd Earl of Wigtown, held the title of earl of Wigtown on 25 January 1365 in Wigtown. Hunter p 477 -
David conferred on him a new charter of the Earldom of Wigton, dated at Perth, 25th January 1365, but he withheld the right of regality, out of deference, it is supposed, to the wishes of Archibald Douglas, Lord of Galloway, who was grievously dissatisfied that another person should exercise such a jurisdiction in a territory with which he was connected. The right of regality was of great importance as by it the possessor was made absolute in his own domains. He held his own courts ; was supreme judge in all cases, civil or criminal ; had the power of death or imprisonment in his own dungeon ; and could reclaim any of his vassals from the court even of the High Justiciar himself.2,3,4 He held the title of earldom of Wigtown without the right of regality on 20 January 1367 in Wigtown.5,6,7,8 He held the title of sold the earldom and the lands to Archibald Douglas on 8 February 1371 in Wigtown. This chatransaction was ratified by King Robert III on 7 Oct 1391.9,10,4,11 He held the title of was styled "Thomas Fleming of Fulwood" in 1375 in Fulwood+. He was no longer styled as "Earl of Wigtown".10,12

  • From 3 October 1357 to 1362 Thomas ("the Pragmatic") Fleming, of Fulwood, 2nd Earl of Wigtown, was occupied as hostage for King David in Berwick-upon-Tweed. He was delivered as hostage to Alan de Strother.13,14,15,16,17,3

Property

Thomas ("the Pragmatic") Fleming, of Fulwood, 2nd Earl of Wigtown, possessed leased these lands to Robert de Erskine to be held in fee and heritage in 1359 in Estyrcroy Westyrcroy Auchynboll Tuefre le Borde le Smythtoun Ballouch and Ardo.18 He possessed inherited the Earldom of Wigtown and associated property on the death of his grandfather Malcolm (1st Earl) circa 1362.4 He possessed gave a charter of his land at Auchinboll to Sir Robert Erskyn for payment of two pennies silver at Whitsunday between 25 January 1363 and 1364 in Edinburgh.19 He possessed leased to Sir Robert Erskine on 25 January 1365 in Lenzie (and Dalnottar?)20 He possessed leased the lands of Easter Croy (Over Croy) ,Wester Croy (Nether Croy), Auchinbee, Twechar, Board, Smithston, Balloch and 'Ardory' (Airdriehead?) within the Barony of Lenzie to Sir Robert of Erskine on 25 January 1365 in Edinburgh.21,22,23 He possessed King David II confirmed his inheritance of the Earldom of Wigtown and its properties on 26 January 1365.24,25,1,26,4 He possessed leased to Sir Robert Erskine for six years on 19 June 1368 in Lenzie (and Dalnottar?)23,27 He possessed granted this land to John Kennedy of Dunure to be holden of the said Thomas circa 1370 in Village of Kirkintilloch.28 He possessed resigned the barony of Carnysmul to the king who then granted it to James de Lindsay in 1371 at Wigtonshire in Barony of Carnysmul.29 He possessed sold the Earldom of Wigtown to Sir Archibald Douglas of Galloway for 500 pounds on 16 February 1371 in Edinburgh.30,24,3,4,31 He possessed granted an annuity to William Boyd of 12 merks annually, payable half-yearly on 12 August 1371.1,32,10 He possessed resigned the lands and earldom of Wigtown to King David II personally, at Perth on 19 April 1372 in Wigtown.33,34 He possessed had royal ratification of his charter of sale to Sir Archibald Douglas on 7 October 1372 in Stirling.35,10 He possessed took out a mortgage of 80 pounds with William Boyd with all his lands within the Barony of Lenzie as security on 11 November 1372 in Cumbernauld.36,37,38,39,10 He possessed granted a charter of the lands of Kirkintilloch to Gilbert Kennedy, ward in 1373 in Kirkintilloch.40,10 He possessed granted a charter to William Boyd, son of the late Thomas Boyd of Kelmarnock, a pension of 12 merks sterling pending a grant of land in Dumbarton or Lanark shires in 1374.41 He possessed sold a conditional holding of these lands to John Kennedy of Dunure for 120 merks, redeemable on procreation from Thomas or his heirs on 16 February 1374 in Cumbernauld.42 He possessed had letters of impignoration (mortgage) to William Boyd confirmedby King Robert II; and Boyd assigned this to Malcolm Fleming of Biggar on 20 June 1374 in Lenzie.1,36,38,43,44 He possessed granted a charter to Gilbert Kennedy, Knight on 13 May 1375 in Kirkintilloch.1,4038,39 He possessed resigned the barony of Lenzie in favour of his cousin and male heir, Sir Malcolm Fleming of Biggar on 20 September 1382 in Lenzie.24,45,46,1,47,4,39,48,10,4950

Death

Thomas ("the Pragmatic") Fleming, of Fulwood, 2nd Earl of Wigtown, died after 1382.22 He had his estate probated circa 1383 in Fulwood+.
