Working life
- Circa 1087 Stephen ("of Bratton"), Flandrensis, was occupied as possibly liegeman to Richard de Redvers.1
- In 1096 Stephen ("of Bratton"), Flandrensis, was occupied as knight of Richard de Redvers. F Lawrence Fleming speculates that Stephen may have participated in the first Crusade, along with his kinsmen from Saint-Omer; and that he may have remained in the Holy Lands for some time. But, he admits, despite a search he has not found any evidence to support this idea.2
Property3
Stephen ("of Bratton"), Flandrensis, possessed inherited the estates of his late father circa 1104.
4 He retained the tenancy of lands inherited from his father in 1106 in Bratton Fleming, Devonshire. Stephen retained the tenancy of the land in Devonshire and Cornwall that he had inherited from his father Erkenbald even after his tenant-in-chief (William, of Mortain) had been deprived of his lands following an unsuccessful rebellion against King Henry I. This implies that Stephen may have been a confidante of the king. Stephen also retained his father's tenure at Launceston under Stephen of Blois who replaced William of Mortain (Plea Roll 2 John).
