Birth
Patrick ("1296 Ragman Rolls signatory") Fleming was born circa 1220. The origins of the Fleming family in Scotland have long been obscured by the weight of tradition and the authority of antiquarian compendia. Writers such as Crawford (1716) and Douglas (1764) offered genealogies rooted more in heraldic assertion than archival substance, tracing the Flemings to vague continental origins or royal favor without anchoring them in the feudal landscape of early Scotland. This chapter proposes a different foundation—one grounded in charters, territorial continuity, and kinship logic. Drawing on evidence from the 13th and 14th centuries, it argues that the Flemings descend from Bartolf, the Hungarian noble who accompanied Queen Margaret to Scotland, not as a cadet line of the Leslies, but as a parallel or even senior branch. Through Simon, Bartolf’s son and brother of Malcolm of Leslie, the Fleming name emerges in the persons of Hugh of Dalnottar, Patricio Flandrensi of Eddleston, and William Flandrensis of Stanhouse—each anchoring a distinct territorial branch. The Flemings of Dumbartonshire, Lanarkshire, and Aberdeenshire thus represent not scattered Flemish settlers, but a coherent aristocratic lineage with deep roots in the Scottish feudal order.
